Maria Miller
Mezzo-soprano Maria Miller is known for her “warm lyric voice” (Opera News) and “big upper range that leaps off the stage” (Herald Tribune). In recent seasons, she made her debut with Sarasota Opera as Lucilla in Rossini's one-act farce, La scala di seta, which Talkin' Broadway describes: “Miller knocks it right out of the ballpark.” Miller recently covered Mrs. Lovett in SWEENEY TODD at Des Moines Metro Opera, and was a member of the Mascarade Opera Studio in Florence, Italy, where she appeared in performances of Handel's Messiah. In 2020-2021, she covered The Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas at Sarasota Opera, and was to cover the Turnspit in Rusalkaat Santa Fe Opera (Covid19). A champion of new works, she has participated in many Cincinnati Opera Fusion Workshops, including as Rumer in FIERCE, Celeste in Castor and Patience, and Nancy Smith in Blind Injustice, in which role she later created in her house debut at Cincinnati Opera for the opera's world premiere in 2019. The live audio recording of Blind Injustice was released by Cincinnati Opera through Fanfare Cincinnati and was featured as a Critic's Choice in Opera News: "Another stunning and dramatically revealing moment is mezzo-soprano Maria Miller's vulnerable and desperate portrayal of Smith's prayer for deliverance ("The Shame of Lorain")".
In concert, she was a soloist for Messiah and Bach B Minor Mass with Collegium Cincinnati, Bernstein MASS with the May Festival, Vivaldi’s Gloria with Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, as well as Opera on the James and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. In 2021, she won an award in the Saisons de la Voix competition for her interpretation of French and American song. She received Encouragement Awards at the 2019 and 2020 MONC Southeast Regional Auditions, and the Treigle Award in the Corbett Competition. Maria holds a Master of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).
