Grace Kahl

New York City native Grace Kahl is an artist hailed for her “poised, gleaming soprano” in a wide array of repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim. Grace has performed across the country with Santa Fe Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Utah Opera, Arizona Opera, Opera Montana, Charleston Opera Theatre, and Dayton Opera. Role highlights include Mary Johnson (Fellow Travelers), Johanna (Sweeney Todd), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), and The Rose (The Little Prince), in addition to covering Juliette (Roméo et Juliette), and Violetta (La Traviata).

In addition to opera, Grace has performed in various concert works across the musical gamut. She has sung with Utah Symphony, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Akron Symphony, and Dayton Philharmonic. Ms. Kahl has appeared as a soloist in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. She has also been involved in a number of World Premieres on both the concert and opera stages, highlighting her affinity for contemporary music. Grace created the roles of Caroline from Kristen Kuster’s A Thousand Acres (Des Moines Metro Opera) and Isabel Haskell from Laura Kaminsky’s Finding Wright (Dayton Opera), as well as debuting Expressions by Steve Winteregg (Dayton Philharmonic). As a chorister, Grace has performed with the TFC since 2015, with which she has been featured as a soloist in extended works such as the Bach Christmas Oratorio, Fauré Requiem, and Brian Galante’s So Hallow’d the Time.

Grace has won awards in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, International Czech and Slovak Competition, Palm Springs Opera Competition, and the Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento Vocal Competition. Ms. Kahl is an alumnus of the young artist programs of Santa Fe Opera (2019), Des Moines Metro Opera (2017/2018), and Utah Opera (2018-2020). Grace holds a Bachelor’s of Music from CUNY Queens College and a Masters of Music/Artist Diploma from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She currently resides on Long Island with her husband, daughter, and dog.

Where did you do your musical training?

I did my Bachelors of Music at Queens College in NYC and I have a Masters of Music and Artist Diploma from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

When did you first start performing with the TFC?

I started singing with TFC in 2015.

What is your all-time favorite choral work?

There are so many good ones, but the one that has impacted me the most is probably the Little Match Girl Passion by David Lang. It creates such an atmosphere!

Where do you live now? And where do you call “home”?

I live on Long Island and call Queens, NY home!

What is your favorite hobby outside of music?

Life is busy lately since having a baby a little over a year ago, but when I have all the time in the world I love to play pool or go to a roller skating rink!

Who is your favorite singer?

90s Renee is iconic!

Who is your favorite actor?

I’ve always been a sucker for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Favorite movie or play?

Toy Story is a comfort movie of mine and I can recite most of it. As is Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. I try to live as carefree as Ferris 😌

What is your favorite meal?

I always love some pasta, especially some vermicelli with some chicken and vegetables and a light sauce 🤌🏻

Who is your favorite sports team?

I’m not a great sports fan because I only pay attention when it’s the playoffs. I just want to watch a good game!

Do you have a favorite TFC or “singing with Rob” anecdote?

One of the most memorable moments was when I first started singing with TFC and Rob called me to see if I could sing the solo in the Faure Requiem as we were on the way to the concert venue. It made for a nerve-racking but a very special first concert!
